Weekend roundup 7/18/08

After a month-plus hiatus, the Weekend roundup is back due to popular demand! (Well, the demand of one, but still.) I'm going antiquing this weekend. I know, I haven't been around in ages. But that's why I supply this list of things to do ... even when I'm out of town. Viva Harrisburg!

The Big Read

I'm stealing this meme (can you steal a meme, or is it inherent?) from Tara at Feels Like Home. Hi Tara, I recently added you to my blogroll.

She writes: I found this on Mom on the Rise, who got it from Suspension of Disbelief, who explains that it's really from The Big Read. According to The Big Read, the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books on this list. How many have you read?

Where I am

I'm at the beach - my first vacation in about two years - and it's raining.

I'm not complaining. We had an unexpected great day at the beach. According to forecasts, we weren't even supposed to SEE the sun today. So, when I awoke at 9:30 (yay for sleeping in on vacation) and the sun was bursting through my ocean-view sliding glass doors, I was thrilled.

I threw on my new swimsuit, grabbed my new sunglasses and beach bag and plopped down in my beach chair.

About an hour ago, we realized it was going to rain. The blue skies and sunshine had submitted to the looming storm clouds. But it's already been a productive vacation. So far I finished my book, read Women's Health, had a Coors Light and Combos for breakfast, played catch in the water with my mom and her beau - AND we just saw a neighboring fisherman pull in an 8-ft Sand Tiger Shark. (He also put him back, as is the law.)

FoM makes news with whistle campaign

Friends of Midtown, the neighborhood group of which I am also a board member, made news this week with its whistle campaign.

Check out the story from ABC27 after the jump.

Why I love the USA Network

I don't really do reality TV (with one to two exceptions). I'm not into America's Next Top anything. I already know I can dance. And I'm way past the MTV cut-off age. So, in the summer of off-season programming, USA Network has really stepped up to the plate for me.

In no particular order, after the jump.

Weekend roundup 6/20/08

OK - first of all, June 20? Are you kidding me? Where is the time going? Second - c'mon people, give me a little nudge if you don't see a new post up here. I have plenty to say. Anyway, I actually AM around this weekend. Tonight, it's Mexican delights at El Sol then off to a colleague's one-woman comedy show, "Oh Crap, I Forgot to Have Kids." Here's the lowdown on the rest of the weekend:

Love tomatoes, but hate salmonella?

Buy local!

The governor sent out a news release yesterday reminding us that Pennsylvania-grown tomatoes are not part of the tomato recall.

There are plenty of good reasons to buy locally grown foods, and this latest in salmonella outbreaks should be a reminder to those who like good food to do their shopping at home.

To learn more about Pennsylvania produce, go to the Dept. of Ag's PA Preferred site. Find fresh produce, by searching PASA's Buy Fresh Buy Local page, and search local farms and farmers markets at LocalHarvest.org.

Or, download this guide to Pennsylvania veggies, care of SustainableTable.org.

Weekend Roundup 6/6/08

Before I sneak out of town again to the County of Elk, I wanted to make sure ya'll know what's going on this weekend, heat or no heat. Spend the day poolside, and then try one of these:

Side Street Cinema returns

Side Street Cinema returns tomorrow night with Dazed and Confused. The outdoor movie series, held biweekly at the corner of Green and Cumberland streets, begin at 9 p.m.

A $5 donation is requested and benefits The Salvation Army and Moviate Film Camp and Filmmaker In-Person Series. Also, don't forget to B.Y.O.C. - bring your own chair.

Nonna's will provide hot dogs, Italian ice and Boylan's soda for most screenings.

Summer Safety Tips

Midtown's neighborhood watch group recently sent out some safety tips for the warm weather season. Most of these apply year-round, but it's good to have a reminder. And while these are provided for the Midtown area, certainly they apply to any city neighborhood. Visit the Midtown Neighborhood Watch site to learn more or to find out about a watch group near you.

Midtown News

Two updates care of the Dauphin County Office of Community and Economic Development:

The Vartan Group plans to build a 100,000-square-foot mixed-use building at Sixth and Reilly streets in Harrisburg. Officials announced that construction could begin before the end of the year, pending city approval of site development plans. Plans call for a sit-down restaurant and other retail shops on street level. The upper floors will have about 40 residential condos that will sell for between $150,000 and $350,000.
