Pete Yorn at the North Star
I'm listening to Pete Yorn's "Day I Forgot" on repeat today. I'm momentarily in love with the rocker since seeing him live at the North Star Bar in Philly on Friday.
Pete's wrapping up his acoustic tour before his new album, "Nightcrawler," drops on August 29.
When our cab pulled up to the North Star Bar, I immediately panicked that I had gotten the venue wrong or that Philly had two North Stars, and I had picked the wrong one.
The bar sits on a corner, and at first glance, looks like a tiny local watering hole. People are sitting at the bar as if it's any night of the week, but we we move closer, we can hear the familiar buzz of live music.
We maneuver through people and pool tables, and an unhappy looking guy takes our tickets. We enter another room that isn't much wider than the one we were in, but spans back toward the street. At that end is the stage.
Pete Yorn and his band had just begun playing (I was late due to train trouble), and we found our spots in the crowd.
I won't bother discussing how rude Philly people are, in general, but here's a tip: If you actually say "excuse me," people usually move out of your way. I was slammed into and stepped on countless times, but as I said, I won't get into it. Pete's performance outshone any negative vibe.
Girls - many, not all - always fall in love with musicians, if only during the performance. I was contemplating my life on the road with Pete Yorn and the rest of the band throughout the show, and still kick myself a little I didn't get a t-shirt.
For this acoustic tour, there was no set list, and they played as they wished, going a few songs over because, Pete said, "We really don't have anywhere to go."
Kelly, who I was visiting for the night and following Saturday, and I stayed around after and caught up over vodka tonics. Most of the show attendees filed out pretty quickly and North Star regulars shot pool.
