Weekend roundup 4/2

Holy busy first week in April! I'm still trying to decide whether to cover St. Thomas Roasters or the new jazz club in Lancaster for my next column (will depend on who and when I can get to come with me). There is a ton going on this weekend, so let's get to it:

• HYP's First Friday HH is at Tara Station from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
• Do a walk-through of the city's arts offerings with First Friday. Check out Arts at 510, Mantis, Gallery Blu, Art House Lounge, Art Association of Harrisburg, Susquehanna Art Museum as well as event sponsor, HMAC.
• Catch Nate Myers & the Aces at Suba Friday from 9-11 p.m.
• Tomorrow, ABC's tapping their coffeehouse collaboration, Cornerstone Espresso Stout.
• Weather-permitting - Brewhouse Grille (not Brew City Grille, Mom) has their deck open, plus tomorrow is Firkin' Friday - come in at 4 p.m. for the fresh Troegs Pale Ale - while it lasts.
• Hershey Theatre is showing James Bond classic, Dr. No, on Saturday.
• For "date night" on a budget, try Doc Holliday's on Wednesdays - Dinner for 2 plus a bottle of wine for $29.99. 
• Phillip Arthur's Old Fashioned Ice Cream opens this weekend. Spring hours are from noon to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

I have been looking forward to this weekend for a long time - I have two close girlfriends whose birthdays, with mine, fall within about three weeks of one another. We usually try to do something together - a few years ago it was a blowout bash at Noma (Remixed) - but this year, we decided to treat ourselves to The Spa at The Hotel Hershey. We're going for massages, pedicures and lunch at the Oasis, so it's sure to be a treat. And it's a busy weekend in the Harrisburg area, too. Here's what's going on:

• It's First Friday in Harrisburg, which means a celebration of the arts, including new exhibition space, Gallery Blu. View the flier: Download FF_March
• Ken blogged about Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center unveiling its first layer this weekend. P-N has info, too.
• Mantis hosts Shawn Michael Vennel 's "Homework" with a reception tonight from 8-10 p.m.
• Shady's, Arooga's and Sam Bucca's all have Saturday UFC fight, no cover charge anywhere.
• PAadventure is featuring One Good Woman in Camp Hill
• BurritoGo at the Broad Street Market has a website
• Char's Bella Mundo offers its "bistro special" - 3 courses for $34 - on Thursdays and Sundays
• Molly's is doing "open bar" for $25/person every Thursday night from 9-11 p.m. Includes all liquors, bottles, shots, etc.

Another week done and gone. Oddly enough, it seemed to zip by, almost, but my 'to do' list is just getting warmed up. This weekend, I'll be partaking in some Chocolate-Covered February activities - for you, my dear readers. Next week's column will include some Hershey-themed Valentine's Day ideas. Then, on Sunday, it might finally be time to get that New Year's resolution kicking at the gym or a yoga class somewhere. And elsewhere:

• It's Firkin Friday at Brewhouse Grill! They'll tap the Tröegs Nugget Nectar at 5 p.m.
• HYP's First Friday HH is at Stock's on Second tonight.
• Things are groovin' over at Champions later tonight when The Impact Band performs your favorite booty-shakin' hits. Or my favorite booty-shakin' hits.
• Flinchy's is rocking with the Luv Gods tonight
• Mantis features artist Shawn Williams tonight from 8-10 p.m.
• Sports Night and West Wing star, Joshua Malina, will perform with cousin Maestro Stuart Malina as HSO conquers Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe. Performances Saturday and Sunday.

Weekend Roundup 12/11

My weekend plans involve cleaning, laundry, shopping and gift-wrapping (glamorous, no?). Before all that, however, it's the big date night with my dad - we're off to see The Rat Pack is Back at Hershey Theatre. I was sort of hoping this was a holiday-themed show, since The Rat Pack Christmas has been cycling on my iPod, but it looks like the classics - which is still excellent. We went last year and had a great time.

Here's some highlights of other weekend goings-on:

• Make an early New Year's resolution to be "athletic" and sign up for HYP's Dodgeball League
• Stop by the Breads 'n Spreads grand opening on Saturday in Midtown
• Arooga's 15 is kicking off its "We're open" celebration with eating contests all weekend long
• Cocoa Perk in Hershey is offering all kinds of Christmas-themed coffee blends
• It's a rocking good time at the Christmas Show at Dragonfly with the Dead 50s and more

Call for Entries: 'FRAMELESS'

The Mantis Collective Presents:

Call For Entries for Upcoming Exhibit Entitled ‘FRAMELESS’

Mantis is accepting entries for a group exhibit scheduled for the month of December. The Focus of the exhibit are works created on Paper. The work should not be framed, hence the title ‘Frameless’. The Opening Reception will be held on Friday, Dec. 5 from 8-10 p.m. The exhibit will close Sunday, Dec. 28.

Criteria For Consideration:

• Works must be created on Paper
• Works may consist of any media on paper
• Works may NOT be framed. (you may use grommet holes, have back mounts, dictate that work be held with pins, or we will be using a magnet floating system which preserves and does not damage the work)
• Work may not exceed 20X24 inches
• Work must be ‘For Sale’

Submission Process:

• Send a brief artist Bio

All accepted artists will receive notification by Nov. 21.

Weekend roundup 9/5

It's another busy weekend. Can you believe we're into September already? I hardly can. But - the most exciting thing about this week is ... THE NFL IS BACK! The Steelers schedule is all screwy this year (meaning, lots of prime time games, not as many traditional Sunday, 1 p.m. kickoffs), so I'm sure I'll be posting about where to watch. But this Sunday, as many of you know, I'll be at my dad's. I wonder what's on the menu.

Anyway, before I spill my black and gold all over you, here's what's going on in the non-football world, after the jump.

Gallery opening @ Mantis

Just a reminder - Mantis is back, this time in Midtown.

Stop in tonight between 7-10 p.m. for the opening reception for local artist Garrick Dorsett.

Mantis returns, now in Midtown

The Mantis Collective, which closed up its North Street gallery at the end of 2007, plans to reopen a temporary new home at Albert Michaels in Midtown Harrisburg.

The "new" Mantis will kick off with a group exhibit from 8-10 p.m. on Saturday, June 28.

Albert Michaels is located at 214 Verbeke Street between Second and Third streets in Midtown Harrisburg.

Andrew Guth and Tara Chickey, Mantis' founders, said they continue plans to find a permanent home for their gallery, but are eager to have a presence in the city once again.
