Weekend roundup 10/11

I'm a little late on the weekend roundup, but I have good excuses - foot surgery and I'm in Elk County. Regardless, I'd hate for you to stumble through the rest of this weekend without a clue what to do, so here's the rundown:

• In response to a Pennlive forum inquiry, Flinchy's says they can make your entree gluten-free, anytime, by request. Also, be sure to ask for their vampire wine from Transylvania - just in time for Halloween.

• HYP has a new website - go there for details on Monday's Movie Night at Midtown Cinema or Wednesday's Debate Watch Party at the Hilton.

Steelers games

In yesterday's column, I lied to you.

I tried to succinctly generalize how I spend my football Sundays, and I said I watch them at home. I do not. I watch them at the home of my father.

For those of you playing along at home, you might've recalled my column on this two seasons ago when the Steelers won the Super Bowl. I went to my dad's house. It's tradition. Plus, he has a bigger TV and better food.

I just wanted to clear this up for my loyal readers. Dad, does this post satisfy you? :)

Resolution update

January's resolution has been completed. The new curtains seem to help with the heat, too, which is a bonus. I also cooked something new (two separate green bean dishes), though I haven't done as much with photography as I'd hoped. Still, the year is young.

In an effort to be more involved with my community, I applied for the communications chair position at Friends of Midtown and got it!

I'm opting to switch the resolutions designated for February and March, mostly just because I want to (and I bought new photo albums at TJ Maxx!).

So, there's the update.

Christmas Recap

It's almost over ... soon, things will be back to normal. So far, the carols are complete, the gift-giving has ceased and well, my holiday cheer has been sucked right out the proverbial window.

I'll get to New Year's resolutions soon enough (though take note of my more frequent posting and cross your fingers it sticks), but first I'd like to brag about my Christmas gifts.

Aside from gift cards to favorite spots like The Limited, Borders and Williams-Sonoma, I received a Kitchen-Aid knife set - in red!

Challenging the slacker

Some of you know that I spent a portion of last year unemployed. (Quick recap for newbies: the Patriot column is not my full time gig - a dream that would be, but alas, Harrisburg nightlife, while thriving, does not yet warrant a reporter to cover 40 or so hours a week and therefore does not compensate one the way a 9-5er does.)

Phew. Now that is out of the way.

So, I spent all of this time "freelancing from home," as I like to call it - and I did a fair share - extra P-N stories, the US Airways piece, other stuff I'm not recalling.

But what I always wanted to do was to write a book. And heck, I had the time to start one, at least, right? I even signed up for NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, which challenges the aspiring author to pen 50,000 words in the month of November. I hardly did a lick.

I'm not proud of those days of anti-productivity (though they did lead me to finally find a good job, plus I baked a lot), and so today I web-blicly challenge myself to NaNoWriMo 2006.
