September preview

What a perfect day to start the month of September. It's that perfect, crisp, jeans-and-t-shirt weather. Thoughts and tweets are ripe with daydreams of football and changing leaves. (We are one of few lucky states to truly experience all four seasons - even if spring is fading into oblivion.)

Weekend roundup 8/20

Loyal followers know that today's Weekend roundup is coming to you live from the Outer Banks. I'm back tomorrow evening, busy with two bridal showers on Saturday and may get a new pet on Sunday (I'll keep you posted on that, too).

At home, this weekend is filled with events of all sorts. Tomorrow's column will talk about some artistic events around Harrisburg, as well as a lead on some specials at the PA Ren Faire. Here's what else is going down:

• Spice's White Party, originally scheduled for tonight, has been canceled. Don't know why.
• It's Ladies Night Out at Rillo's and the theme is a Beach Luau. Have dinner, build a sandcastle - the whole shebang.
• "Get Lucky" tonight at Privado with $2 domestics, $3 drinks, $4 martinis. And no, I don't know why "drinks" are $3 - Isn't a martini a drink?
• Friday at the Hilton it's a Fiesta Espanol Happy Hour - Tapas & sangria for $15
• Tomorrow is also musicFriday at Annex 24 Gallery in Lancaster
• Start your Saturday at the Cordier Antiques Real Estate Auction
• Los Straitjackets play their surf rock sounds at ABC's Abbey Bar Saturday night. Buy your tickets here.
• Saturday, Garrason's has $2.50 Troegs bottles and $5 Garrason's Lemonade all day.
• Beginning this week, Arooga's 15 hosts an All-Video Dance Party every Sunday with DJ Caraby
• Sundays at Lancaster Brewing Co.'s Harrisburg location feature 1/2 price wings and $3 pints all day.
• Tuesday, Aug. 25, "Get the Fresh Herb Habit" via a class at Cornerstone Coffeehouse's Culinary Kitchen.

Weekend roundup 7/2

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking "Holy heck, how did it get to be July?" And so that's where we are with that right now. In tomorrow's column, you'll read about some special "invite only" (but not really) events  - a little something different for your (hopefully) holiday weekend. Here's the shakedown:

• It's Musicfest. For newbies, we have 3 street festivals for the 3 summer holidays. This one focuses on  live bands, and you can catch all the details here. But really, at least go for a pulled pork sandwich and a funnel cake.
• Tonight: Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra performs in Negley Park. A scenic view with the sounds of strings ... I hope. Thunderstorms are in the forecast once again. 
• Spice has a special Happy Hour from 6-8 p.m. tonight - enjoy $3 Three Olives Pomegranate Martinis - plus a special half-price menu and draft beer.
• Friday, The Soup Spot is open until 2 p.m. for pick-up/delivery.
• Open auditions are being held for Theatre Harrisburg's rendition of Annie.
• Did you know Privado is open from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Sunday nights?
• The Summer Jazz Series on the Hilton Patio is in high gear. Be sure to check it out.

Weekend roundup - May Day

Things on my 'to do' list this weekend: drink a Mint Julep and watch the Derby (maybe at Penn National?), head out to Duke's for a friend's birthday celebration (weather permitting), guest bartend at ABC's Bluegrass, Brews and BBQ and do laundry. There's a ton going on, so here are some other options:

• Wine Festival today in Hershey
• Tonight's HYP First Friday Happy Hour (HH) is at Spice
• It's also First Friday - experience your local gallery
• All weekend long, catch Broadway '60, the season finale for Theatre Harrisburg
• The decks are open at Houlihan's, Flinchy's, Brewhouse Grille
• Starting today, try the new High Point Garden mani/pedi treatments at The Spa at The Hotel Hershey
• Don't miss the Kentucky Derby on Saturday! Check out Jump Street's annual Derby Day event
• For a refreshing cocktail, try What If ...? of Hershey's May infusion: Vanilla PIneapple Stoli
• The Garden Faire at Fort Hunter runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday
• If it rains, maybe take a class at Williams-Sonoma on frittatas, stratas and more

Spice "White Party" July 24

Spice, formerly Fisaga, is hosting a private "White Party" on Thursday, July 24. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the restaurant. Only 125 tickets remain. See the flyer below for more details.

In like a lion, out like a lamb

That's right, it's the weekend round-up. Before I head out to glorious Elk County this weekend, I wanted to leave you with some thoughts.

• Tonight, the MODE Happy Hour is at the newly redesigned Spice (Fisaga). Drinks and apps are cheap from 5-7 p.m.
• You must visit Kasbah tomorrow night for a night of belly dancing and Moroccan delights. A four-course prixe fixe dinner is $45 per person. BYOB.
• If you're feeling a little friskier, however, stop over to the CPAA's "Spay-ghetti" dinner at the New Cumberland Fire Hall from 4-7 p.m. and eat sketties to help animals!
• Don't be an April fool - Troegs "The Art of Drinking Tröegs bottle cap Art Contest" kicks off on April 1.
• Come out for opening day at Commerce Bank Park. The Senators kick off their season on Thursday, April 3 at 6:35 p.m. against the Akron Aeros.
