Weekend roundup 8/27

I'm going to try to do this without remarking on the fact that - whaaa? August is over, all ready? Instead, I lament the fact that I wasn't able to make time to write my North Carolinian Epilogue this week (though there's still time, albeit waning interest). We're looking at a surge of activity before September and cooler autumn temperatures and let's face it - football.

Tonight, I'm hitting the town for some local art - first to Choke Deisgn Co. for their "AuGusto!" event, an open house event showcasing their work. After, I'll be headed to Suba for a photography reception for local filmmaker Jeff Lynch. Hoping for a long-awaited field trip to a local winery on Friday, and cleaning and unpacking comprises the rest of the weekend.

Here's the skinny on what else H-burg has to offer - including fresh web design for several of our local establishments:

• Also tonight, Harrisburg Hello's Downtown at Sundown is at McGrath's tasting Jack Daniels from 5-7 p.m.
• Tomorrow, take in the first in a series of wine dinners at the Hilton
• In case you missed it, ArtHouse Lounge is still hosting the "Censor This" exhibit through Saturday
• Relive Woodstock at Midtown Cinema this weekend. Free popcorn for all who dress up.
• All Arooga's locations have no cover charge for Saturday's UFC fight. Check out their new website.
• You know fall is nearing when Troegs breaks out the Dead Reckoning Porter; also check out their collaboration with St. Thomas Roasters - the limited edition, Javahead. See also: new website!
• Bricco is now open from 3-8 p.m. Sundays with a new menu
• Civitas (formerly Table 15, formerly Bayou) now has its own website
• Next Wednesday, 9/2 is the last of the Sunset Reggae Series at ABC

New website design

You may have already noticed (those of you viewing via your RSS reader want to click through today) that my blog has gone through a significant visual change. This upgrade is care of local web gurus, Mudbrick Creative.

The Mudbrick team of Paul and Tyler worked with me to create a design and look that defined me and my blogging role in the Harrisburg community. I think what they've come up with is great. Sophisticated and stylish, with a gradient landscape of Harrisburg in the background, the look is easy on the eyes with just a hint of edge. Please click through to read more about the update.

Tweet-up tomorrow at ABC

Tomorrow night is the monthly local blogger/Twitter meet-up, which we affectionately term, "The Tweet-up."

If you're new, read my column on the event, which we hold at 7 p.m. every third Thursday of the month at the Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Company. It's an informal gathering of those involved in the local online community. If you have a blog or a Twitter handle, you're welcome to stop by. We usually hang out for a few hours, some later than others - so don't feel lassoed by the 7 p.m. start time.

If only these things were around in my day ...

Mental_Floss, your favorite "makes me feel smarter - and it's fun" magazine/blog knows that College Ain't Cheap. That's why they're asking you to tell them in 750 words or less why you are THE MOST deserving of a $10,000 scholarship towards tuition and books in the fall of 2009 (that's right now). The essay contest is open to students 18 and older who are pursuing a degree at any accredited two- or four-year college in the country.

They're looking for fun, smart and quirky - with out any pretension.
