Weekend roundup 2/26

Hopefully by the time I publish this post, I'm finished writing for my Hershey project. It's been draining me, and those of you who have talked to me in the last few weeks know I've been plum-near a hermit, furiously creating sentences. This weekend (we hope) will be different. On hand, I have birthday drinks (told you it was birthday season), party at Garrason's and a wine dinner at Flinchy's that will be the focus of my next column. Here's what else:

• This weekend kick's off UnCork York's Tour de Tanks. Read about it in yesterday's column.
• Garrason's celebrates one year under the ownership of Rob "Hollywood" Fogleman. Be there or be square.
• Midtown Cinema has the top 3 Oscar winning movies, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk and The Reader, plus all the Oscar short films.
• Sunday is Dauphin County's Maple Sugar Festival from noon to 4 p.m. at Fort Hunter Park. Yum.
• WXPN hosts Member Appreciation Day on Monday. Call or email your requests from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• I'm really amped up about Confit's Wild Game & Beer dinner on Wednesday, March 4
• Also, the Chefs of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts have a new culinary blog.

Lola's is moving to Second Street

Lola's Day Spa & Salon is moving! Lola's will join neighbor Colbalt Salon at 202 N. Second Street, former home to the "Psychics on Second," leaving its current Shops on 3rd location (across from Whitaker Center).

This new, more central location will bring a few changes to the business itself. Revamped as "Lola's Nail Bar & Boutique," with a focus on "manis & martinis," Lola's will no long offer skincare services, but will focus on manicures and pedicures, as well as an expanded boutique collection.

It will be promoted as a spot for girls to gather for their first drink of the night - a U-shaped table will allow multiple manicures and for friends to gather as if at the bar.

Lola's was one of the first in the area to carry the coveted Bare Escentuals line of makeup and will continue to do so, as well as other beauty products, fragrances, clothing, handbags and jewelry.

Lola's Nail Bar & Boutique will move into its new digs on Monday, March 9.

Join me for "Yappy Hour" this Tuesday

Yikes, sorry for the short notice, people. I am joining several other local media personalities this Tuesday, Feb. 24 at ABC Camp Hill for "Yappy Hour." We did the same event last year, raising more than $1,700 to help benefit Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance on National Spay Day.

Jen Shade of 105.7 The X, and Diane Grey of MIX 106.7, will stir things up from from 5 to 6 p.m.; Bob Hauer, WHP 580 radio, from 6 to 7 p.m. I'll be pouring drinks from 7-8 p.m. All of the tips collected by guest bartenders will go to the CPAA.

You're likely familiar with all of ABC's fine brews, most which will be just $3 during the event, and ABC also will feature three special drinks in honor of the event: the Greyhound, the Kitty Cat and the Dog Biscuit. Read more after the jump.

Weekend roundup 2/20

It's birthday season around here. Tonight, I'll be celebrating with a good friend for her 35th - or as she's calling it "the 14th anniversary of her 21st birthday." We'll be dancing and sipping cranberry martinis at Scott's for the event. The rest of the weekend, I'm hunkered down making words into sentences, sadly missing another birthday celebration in Philly. Another birthday next week ... and two weeks after that, my 30th. Stay tuned. In other news, here's what the weekend has:

• Catch Happy Hour downtown at the Hilton tonight with Theatre Harrisburg from 6 p.m. 'til curtain call.
• ABC is once again hosting the Art Association's Bal Masque this Saturday - featuring Midnight Spaghetti
• Want to show off your air guitar skills? Join the Video Game Competition at Whitaker Center tomorrow.
• The Comedy Zone has the Irish Comedy Tour all weekend.
  
• Open Stage has performances of Rabbit Hole now through March 1.
• Sunday, check out Central PA Friends of Jazz hosts The Vincent Gardner Quintet at 5 p.m. at the Hilton.
• On Tuesday, I'll join other media personalities for Yappy Hour, the CPAA's annual fundraiser. We'll be pouring drinks at ABC Camp Hill for charity. Live music, tasty appetizers, good beer and more. Please stop out between 5-8 p.m.

Happy Friday the 13th, part 1. It looks like everyone is going to Funky Friday tonight at ABC, and that's where I'll kick off the weekend. I'm spending my V-day in Hershey, of course. Then, the rest of the three-day weekend will be spent hunkered down with work. And the beat goes on ...

• Kick it old school Wanda's style at Harrisburg Hardware Bar tonight with Green Eggs.
• Whitaker Center's new Forces of Nature exhibit looks like a cool weekend activity.
• Duh. It's Millennium Music Conference weekend. Let the sounds abound.
• Ruthless opens at Theatre Harrisburg .
• Tomorrow, the Giant store in Mechanicsburg will open an in-store Allegro Vineyard Wine Shoppe.
• Antique & Collectible Auction at Prosser Hall in Camp Hill on Sunday.

Another week done and gone. Oddly enough, it seemed to zip by, almost, but my 'to do' list is just getting warmed up. This weekend, I'll be partaking in some Chocolate-Covered February activities - for you, my dear readers. Next week's column will include some Hershey-themed Valentine's Day ideas. Then, on Sunday, it might finally be time to get that New Year's resolution kicking at the gym or a yoga class somewhere. And elsewhere:

• It's Firkin Friday at Brewhouse Grill! They'll tap the Tröegs Nugget Nectar at 5 p.m.
• HYP's First Friday HH is at Stock's on Second tonight.
• Things are groovin' over at Champions later tonight when The Impact Band performs your favorite booty-shakin' hits. Or my favorite booty-shakin' hits.
• Flinchy's is rocking with the Luv Gods tonight
• Mantis features artist Shawn Williams tonight from 8-10 p.m.
• Sports Night and West Wing star, Joshua Malina, will perform with cousin Maestro Stuart Malina as HSO conquers Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe. Performances Saturday and Sunday.

Tips from 'Your Big Fat Boyfriend' author

THON Night Out

Help support the Penn State Alumni Association Harrisburg Chapter's fundraising efforts for THON by dining out at Appalachian Brewing Company (either west or east shore location) tomorrow night - Wednesday, Feb. 4 - between 5 and 9 p.m.

ABC has agreed to donate 10 percent of food sales between those hours to PSU's THON fundraising drive.

At the Camp Hill location, I recommend Artie's crab and spinach dip as well as the burgers. Downtown, I hear the pork medallions rate high.
